No bail for man who lied to the court

A BUSINESSMAN was remanded to prison after he was slapped with the charge of fraudulent conversion, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday.Carlos Singh had initially entered a guilty plea to the charge, which alleged that on November 9, 2015 in Georgetown, he was entrusted to sell 12 portable DVD players, 30 Mac lights, a quantity of 4GB flash drives, along with 2 Samsung cellular phones, 24 panties and 7 pairs of socks –total value $585,000, property of Larry Gosarian.
However, despite Singh’s guilty plea, he requested an opportunity to pay the virtual complainant in raw gold and return some of the items which he had at his home. As such, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan adjourned the matter for a few hours.
However, upon the matter being re-called, Singh showed up in court with a lawyer, and changed his plea. The court heard that no raw gold was found while 11 DVD players, 2 cellular phones, 8 flash drives along with 2 pairs of socks were recovered.
“You came this morning and lied to the court. I’m not going to grant you bail. You have proven to be a dishonest man.” Those were the words of the Chief Magistrate as she accepted his change of plea. He was refused bail and ordered to return to court on January 13.
Police Corporal Deniro Jones, in presenting the prosecution’s case, explained that Gosarian was a known importer and had given the items to Singh, who has a shop in the interior. The defendant took the items and the importer’s money and never returned. But one day the victim saw the accused in the Bourda area, and made contact with the police.
