A MAHAICONY family was plunged into mourning this Christmas season as one of their own who was returning from a trip to Berbice Saturday evening lost his life on the Letter T Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), after his car crashed into a barbwire fence and slammed into a coconut tree. Dead is 40-year-old carpenter, Darwyn Michael Gordon of Zeskendren, Mahaicony, ECD. He leaves to mourn five sisters and three brothers. A doctor at the scene pronounced him dead before he reached the Mahaicony Hospital. His mangled Toyota Premio motorcar, PRR 8791, was removed from the scene and taken to the Mahaicony Police Station.
A police release said investigations are being conducted into the fatal accident which occurred at 20:30hrs Saturday evening on the Letter T Mahaicony Public Road which resulted in the death of Gordon. It was revealed that the driver of the motor vehicle was driving at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree.
According to an eyewitness, Gordon raced past him along the West Berbice road a few minutes before he met his demise. “By the time people reached the scene he was already dead.”
The man’s sister, Jacqueline Roberts, told this publication that her brother returned home from work Saturday while she was on an overseas call speaking to another sister.
“I hear he went downstairs and start the car and I thought that he was going to park it, so I didn’t check and I went to bathe and rest, then I received a call and someone told me he had a crash and he died,” Roberts lamented.
Family and relatives who gathered at the home described Gordon as a jovial and friendly individual. They also noted that his death has sent shockwaves throughout the family as there will be no real Christmas celebrations this year. “Only God knows what happened, I don’t know what to say or what exactly happened,” Roberts said in a sad tone.
