SKELDON High School won the first prize in the sixth annual Berbice Inter-School Chess Championship, held recently at Manchester, Corentyne.The winners edged out former champions Berbice High School’s Team A, who had to settle for the Second Prize while Vryman’s Erven Secondary took the Third Prize.

First Prize Winning Team Members of Skeldon High School were Safraz Esau, Orsino Moses, Ravin Hendricks and Dujohn Singh.
Darwin London of Berbice Educational Institute claimed the Individual Category Top Prize, Veral Felix of Orealla Secondary won the second prize in the Individual Category, and Rayon Clifford of J.C. Chandisingh Secondary won the third prize.
A total of forty students from eleven schools (ten Secondary and one Primary ) had participated in this year’s Berbice Inter-School Chess Championship.
Mr Krishnanand Raghunandan, Organizer-Coordinator of the competition praised the Department of Education, Region 6, for its vital support to the competition.
The department has been footing all the expenses for refreshments and travel for students and teachers, since the inaugural Berbice Inter-School Chess Championship in 2010.
He also had words of appreciation for Ms Sherryann Felix, mother of Veral, who escorted her son on the long boat journey from Orealla, Upper Corentyne river so he could participate in the competition at the Manchester Secondary.

Former University of Guyana student, Steve Leung, conducted the competition, which was played according to a knockout format. He was ably assisted by teachers Wayne de France, Dane Grimmond, Joseph Brijbilas, Winston Profitt, and Zahir Moakan.
Trophies were sponsored by the following : Regional Chairman, Region Six; V. Ganesh Service Station, Bush Lot, Corentyne; Tajpaul Ajodhea & Family; Malesha Mackoon, Rose Hall Town; D. Balram (Shane), Rose Hall Town; Bibi’s Travel Service, Rose Hall Town.
Other contributions towards the competition came from prominent Region 6 residents Dr Walter Singh, Dr Sherlock Rawana, and Anand Matadeen.
