THE Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) resistance and speed were not effective enough after they were overpowered 35 – 31 by the Caribs in a highly contested match on Saturday, when the Guyana Rugby Union (GRFU), GTT sponsored Tens tournament continued at the National Park Rugby Field.During the tense battle between the two teams, Yamaha Caribs Theodore Henry was able to slip past the GDF’s defensive line up three times scoring 21 points for his team.

Adding to the score sheet for Caribs were Captain Akeem Fraser and Alain Crawford with one try each and a field goal.

The Army’s 31 points in defeat came from Avery Corbin who scored 17 points while Jevon Eastman and Joseph Rahaman supported the team with one try each and a conversion.

In the second match of the day the Pepsi Hornets won by default after the Guyana Police Force (GPF) rugby team was a ‘no show’ for their clash.

Despite the loss, the GDF is still in title contention, leading with 11 points; two more than the Pepsi Hornets (nine), followed by the University of Guyana (UG) Wolves and Yamaha Caribs both with five points each. The GPF Rugby team is in the cellar, only managing to pick up one point.

Continuation of the tournament is set for Thursday as the Police takes on the Caribs at 16:30 hours, at the National Park.

This year the teams are contesting for bragging rights in the GTT Sponsored Tournament, and would be presented with trophies and medals at the finals on Saturday.
