PERSONS from various walks of life, including civil rights activists and other eminent individuals, gathered on Wednesday at Moray House to pay tribute to the late civil rights activist Zenita Nicholson.

During the course of the proceedings, Zenita was remembered for her bravery and spirit in fighting for civil rights and gender equality. She had been Country Coordinator for the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities/PANCAP Global Fund.
She was also described as a person who had embodied the principles and exemplified the traditions of personal freedom and equality, and those remain shared values between Guyana and the United States, U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission, Bryan Hunt, had said in presenting Nicholson with the Woman of Courage Award in March, 2014.
Paying her tribute on this occasion, Hunt said: “She [had] been an energetic, effective and passionate advocate at both the national and international levels for the principle that both women’s rights and the rights of lesbians, gays, bi-sexual and transgender persons are human rights, deserving of equal attention and protection.”
Zenita Nicholson died on October 26, 2015, and was laid to rest on October 31 without ‘a proper send-off’. This event of reflection was accordingly decided on during a month in which advocacy for equality is being touted.
