IN light of the road culture displayed by some drivers on our roadways, more so within recent times, it was noted that it is not in keeping with good road safety practices.

In this respect, Traffic Chief Dion Moore yesterday appealed for all road users to be mindful of each other since the traffic department has employed the full use of the closed-circuit television cameras mounted at various sections of the city and atop traffic lights to assist in the apprehension of defaulters.
Moore told this newspaper yesterday that the CCTV footage has enabled them to locate the vehicle and the driver who had fled the scene of a hit-and-run fatal accident on Pike Street, Kitty, over the weekend.
He explained that they reviewed the footage, and were able to apprehend the driver days after, and he is in custody assisting with investigations. A pillion rider was killed after the motorcycle he was on collided with the open-back pickup.

Moore said that so far, Police statistics have revealed that Guyana has recorded a decrease in fatalities and road accidents.
He disclosed that for this year, they tallied 95 road accidents with 112 deaths, while for the corresponding period last year, they had 121 road accidents with 130 deaths.
The senior officer appealed to drivers to adhere to the basic road safety practices, considering the wet conditions of the roads during the rainy season which is upon us.
He advised that road users take the necessary precaution by reducing their speed to avoid and reduce road accidents, and at the same time watch out for pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and others who are competing for space on our roadways, especially in the city during this busy festive season.
Moore also encouraged members of the public to drink responsibly during this season, and desist from drinking and driving. He also asked that they, too, also strive to promote road safety.
