THIRTY-THREE-year-old Ronita Roberts of 33 Joseph Pollydore Street, Georgetown, was on Tuesday placed on her own recognisance after she was charged with fraudulent conversion before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.The charge read that between August 1 and 31, 2015, being solely entrusted by Askari Ferrier with one Samsung Galaxy S5 cell-phone to keep and deliver same, fraudulently converted the said item to her own use and benefit.
The facts of the matter were not stated by the police prosecutor.
Defence counsel requested that the court take his client’s circumstances into consideration, as he was applying for her to be placed on self-bail. He stated that the two parties once shared a relationship which they have a child from, and that she was currently unemployed. She also has custody of the child.
Her lawyer stated that his client and the virtual complainant were in a “box hand,” which was worth $200,000. Ferrier collected the money and went to Suriname, and after he returned, he gave Roberts $30,000, but still owes her.
The magistrate placed the defendant on self-bail. The matter has been adjourned until December 14.
