Guyana’s Kayla DeSouza was named the League 1 Ontario Defender of the year recently when the Canadian Professional Football league announced the top individual performers for 2015.
A regular starter for the Guyanese Women’s National team, Kayla’s strong play all season long was a major factor in her Club Durham United’s outstanding defensive record in 2015. The team conceded only 13 goals between League and Cup play.
A tenacious defender, Kayla also demonstrated a deft touch on the ball and great vision and passing ability out of the back.
Her leadership as team captain was integral to the continued success of Durham, and provided a foundation for the team to build its attacking moves. She notched one goal in 2015.
Kayla, along with sister (and DUFC team-mate) Briana De Souza, will be participating in the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers in Texas next February, representing Guyana.
