WHAT event can produce a glittering parade of nations featuring the most beautiful and talented women from over 100 countries, a welcome dinner with the finest Hainanese cuisine, and a one-of-a-kind fireworks show? Only Miss World!
And amidst all the festivity, glitz and glamour is Guyana’s own Lisa Punch, doing her best to bring the coveted crown and title to these shores.

Miss World is an annual competition which sees young women from around the world competing for the coveted crown and title of Miss World! This year, the event takes place in Sanya, China.

TASTE OF FAME
Just recently, at the luxurious Beauty Crown Grand Hotel in Sanya, Miss World hopefuls got their first taste of international fame when they were presented to the public, international media, and Sanya’s top dignitaries, for the first time at Miss World’s official welcome ceremony.
As the contestants waited in line to film their official Miss World Profiles — one by one, make-up flawless and not a grain of hair out of place — it’s hard not to think about what is going on underneath their blindingly beautiful façades.
The Welcome Ceremony was, without a doubt, an unforgettable experience, made all the more special by the arrival of Miss Ethiopia, whose flight was unfortunately delayed by bad weather in Beijing.
It was truly nothing short of spectacular, and featured a glittering parade of nations, a welcome dinner for all of the contestants, a dazzling firework display, and – believe it or not – a night of dancing to EDM music, to initiate the commencement of the competition and mark Miss World’s highly-awaited return to Sanya in 2015!

A SANYA WELCOME
The Welcome Ceremony commenced with the customary parade of nations, where the delegates, wearing necklaces made of orchids presented to them by local children, paraded through the Beauty Crown Grand Hotel’s Great Hall, and honourably represented their countries to hundreds of onlookers, press, and VIPs, symbolising the future of China’s relations with the world and the importance of cultural diversity and harmony.
What these women will say in their profiles will be shared for the world to see, and can either ignite passion or disinterest from their fans and countrymen cheering them on, so the pressure is definitely on!
Did we mention that the profiles are also less than a minute long? While the short duration may seem like a breeze, the limited amount of time tests the contestants’ ability to pitch themselves, their passions, and their aspirations with as little explanation as possible, all while trying to engage the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world.
Among the dazzling bevy of beauties, our home-girl Lisa Punch was quite outstanding as she headed with the others to do their profiles by the Beauty Crown Grand swimming pool, with a mixture of anxiousness and determination in her eyes. We could not help but enquire about her secrets to preparing for such a mega occasion.
Trust me when we say that it takes much more than a few visits to the salon and manicurist to succeed at the Miss World Pageant!
With the combined support of all Guyanese who knows what wonders Miss Punch can do on the international stage.
