THE amateur boxing referee/ judges fraternity will benefit from a three- day workshop to be conducted by AIBA Three Star referee/judge James Beckles. The Trinidadian touched down in Guyana Saturday night and is scheduled to start sharing knowledge from 1 pm today at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym in Albouystown.
The workshop will focus on AIBA Technical Rules with special attention being placed on the recently launched AIBA Heads Up programme. There would be a grading of officials just before the workshop concludes on Wednesday.
Over 20 locals and eight referee/judges from the Caribbean are expected to participate in the workshop which is being used to update regional officials on recent AIBA rules ahead of the four-day Caribbean Development Boxing tournament which starts here on Thursday.
The tournament has attracted interest across the Caribbean with 14 countries registered to compete. A number of the countries have also registered referee/judges with the first set listed to arrive tomorrow.
Beckles is one of the top officials in the region and featured prominently at the World Championships held last month in Doha, Qatar. His travel to Guyana was made possible by the Guyana Olympic Association.
