Intense competition on night one of Guinness Greatest In Da Street

THE Georgetown leg of the 2015 Guinness Greatest In Da Street Futsal competition kicked off on Friday night at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac and immediately heated up competitiveness. On a night which seemed hard to score there were five slim victories out of the eight matches, while the others were goalless draws. However, a point is awarded for a draw in the prelims while the victor pockets three.
In the opening match North Ruimveldt defeated Island All-star 2 – 0 as both goals were scored in quick succession by Nickosie Barker (12th & 13th).
North East La Penitence needled Queen Street Tiger Bay, following the second match between South Ruimveldt and Festival City Street Fighters which ended in a draw. Calvin Moore drew first blood in the fifth minute for North East but that goal turned out to be the decider.
After that Cross Street and Globe Yard contested the night’s second draw then West Back Road got past South Sophia 1 – 0. Jamal Haynes’ fourth minute strike was enough to get points on the board for West Back Road.
Game six, the final drawn match of the night took place between Albouystown B and Holmes Street Tiger Bay.
The penultimate showdown on Friday saw East Front Road defeat Alexander Village 2 – 0. A goal each from Dillon Kelly (7th) and Shaka Jones (12th) was enough to give their side the win.
Sparta Boss wrapped up the evening with a two possession win over Broad Street Bullies that also included a clean sheet. The two sides battled to a goalless first half but the match’s weight shifted when Dennis Edwards and Sheldon Shepherd struck in the 18th and 19th minutes to gain the upper hand until the regulation whistle was sounded.
The competition continues on Tuesday night at the East Ruimveldt Community Centre Tarmac. (Kizan Brumell)
