CHRISTOPHER Barnwell and Gudakesh Motie rocked the Leeward Islands top order late in the afternoon session to put the Guyana Jaguars in an imposing position at stumps on day two of their West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional Four-Day match at the Guyana National Stadium.Guyana Jaguars declared their first innings at 419 – 9 a few overs after tea and bounced back to restrict the opposition to 48 – 4 at the close of play, a lead of 371 runs.
Sherwin Peters and Shane Jeffers began the run chase for the Hurricanes but the latter fell for nine with the score on 25, caught and bowled by Barnwell. Two deliveries later the new batsman Daron Cruickshank was trapped leg before wicket by Barnwell without scoring.
Motie then joined the party when he got rid of Nkrumah Bonner leg before wicket for a duck, then drew Orlando Peters off balance to be stumped by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble, without coming off the mark.
Barnwell and Motie pressed until the end of play but Shane and Steve Liburd, the captain, fought back to prevent further damage during the 31 overs they faced. Liburd is unbeaten overnight on 20 while the opener has 15.
Earlier in the day, Guyana resumed on 218 – 5 with Singh on 111 along with Barnwell (19) at the other end. Alazarri Joseph claimed the wicket of Barnwell on 48, caught by Liburd with the score on 266. Singh added 39 runs to his tally to reach 150 then was bowled trying to paddle Jacques Taylor around the corner. He recorded only 13 boundaries after facing 384 deliveries.
Bramble and Barnwell batted well down the order as Jaguars went to lunch on 306 – 7 and rallied to 403 – 8 at tea.
Joseph recorded his first Regional five-wicket haul when Bramble was out hooking, caught on the square leg boundary for 42.
Former West Indies Under-19 captain Steven Jacobs played an impressive innings down the order as he reached his fourth regional fifty. He was left unbeaten on 63* when Guyana made their declaration after Ronsford Beaton (18) was the last wicket to fall.
Joseph ended with 5 – 99 from 27 overs while Taylor supported with 3 – 70 from 24.1 overs.
Play continues today at 9:30 hrs.
