Fisherman remanded for armed robbery

FISHERMAN Richard Bourne of Lot 14 Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged with robbery under arms.Bourne denied that on Monday, November 9, in Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, he robbed Roopnarine Shaw of a gold and silver hand band, a silver chain, and $47,000 cash, all totalling $117,000.

It is alleged that on the day in question, the virtual complainant was about to enter his motorcar when the 43-year-old defendant approached him from behind and demanded, at knife point, the articles mentioned in the charge. He then made good his escape, during which Shaw’s band fell to the ground.

The prosecutor also told the court that the defendant is known to the police, since he was charged in 2013 for the theft of a Jialing 110-8 motorcycle valued at $168,000, property of Andre Vince, and also has had prior brushes with the law.

Chief Magistrate McLennan refused the defendant bail, and remanded him until December 14, when he is scheduled to make his next court appearance. (Clestine Juan)
