ON NOVEMBER 10, 1995 Guyanese-born junior middleweight Tony Marshall lost a 10-round fight by majority decision to American Glenwood Brown. The contest was held at the Bally’s Park Place Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was payback time for Brown who had lost by unanimous decision to Marshall’s compatriot Anthony `The Pearl’ Andrews two years earlier. The USA-based Marshall, an orthodox boxer left Guyana as a boy and took up residence in Albany, New York. He joined the professional ranks in April 1991 and returned home in 1995 to provide glove-work for Andrews, who was preparing for a world title clash against Jorge Castro.
Marshall made two unsuccessful challenges for world titles. The first happened in November 1994 when `The Tiger’ clashed with Argentine Julio Cesar Vasquez for the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt.
Vasquez was adjudged the winner via unanimous decision. Marshall’s second attempt ended in similar manner.
The Guyanese travelled to Madrid, Spain in July 2000 to challenge homeboy and World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Javier Castillejo. Marshall called it quits in 2005 with a record of 37-13-6.
