ST Margaret’s Primary and No.5 Primary made their way into the final of the North Georgetown Zone and West Berbice District, respectively, with contrasting wins in the Scotiabank Kiddy Progression One Cricket. St Margaret’s became the first team to reach the final when they defeated Green Acres Primary by 54 runs at the Racquet Centre yesterday.
Batting first, St Margaret’s racked up 170-3 in their 14 overs. Leading the way was Shameer Haynes who struck an unbeaten 42 and he was supported by Michael Morgan who was left unbeaten on 24. Jeron Payne led the way with the ball as he bagged 2-2.
In reply, Green Acres openers Shawn Thompson and Omish Balgobin got them off to a quick start; they were 20 in just 1.5 overs.
However, although they threatened St Margaret’s total for the first half of the run chase, they were eventually held to 116-6 when their overs expired. Shawn Thompson finished with 30 while Haynes followed up his batting with excellent bowling figures of 2-5.
Playing at the No.5 ground, Blairmont Primary could manage only 108-6 with Veera Farhad making an attractive 34 while Jameer Elgin contributed 29. They were held to their final score by Leron Smart and Nalessa Johnson who both claimed 2-2.
The home team, backed by their supporters, reached their target (110-2) in 12 overs. Leading the way was Ronell Savory with 54 while Maisha Jameer took the only two wickets to fall for five runs.
No.5 will now play Hopetown Primary in the final on a date to be announced.
Meanwhile, Redeemer Primary dispatched Rama Krishna Primary by 13 wickets in the East Georgetown Zone. Rama Krishna, who won the toss and decided to take first strike made 92-8. Bryan Gordon (11) was the only batter to get into double digits while extras top-scored with 44 extras. Linden Ogle recorded two wickets to head the bowling attack.
When Redeemer Primary took to the crease, they blasted their way to 93-1 with Sharlon Millington smashing an unbeaten 50 which included eight towering sixes, one of which ended the match. Ogle completed an excellent all-round display by also smashing 36 runs which were all scored in sixes. Kenisha Sandy took the lone wicket to fall.
Today, North Georgetown Primary and St Agnes Primary will battle in the second semifinal of the North Georgetown Zone at the Racquet Centre, to see who will meet St Margaret’s in the final.
