THE STAG Elite League continues tonight at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) base Camp Ayanganna ground with another interesting double-header. From 18:00hrs, Slingerz FC will look to continue their good showing in the league when they come up against Buxton United, then in the night’s second game Fruta Conquerors will face Alpha United.
In their first meeting, Buxton United lost 2-0 against Slingerz FC and Alpha United won by a similar margin over Fruta Conquerors.
The Buxton United/Slingerz FC game could be seen as a grudge match between the two sides, based on all the off-the-field drama that unfolded over the last couple of weeks.
Buxton United, the only East Coast Demerara club in the league, fell 2-0 to the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) in their last outing and would want to make a statement that they are not a ‘pushover’.
The (Buxton United) club can boast of winning three of their nine games played so far, but they also picked up six losses (tied with Monedderlust with the most).
Slingerz FC’s only defeat came on technicality after the club had failed to take the field against the GDF and to date, coach Joseph Wilson’s men are without their St Vincent and the Grenadines imports, along with Domini Garnett.
Julian Wade, Vurlon Mills, Joshua Brown, Colin Nelson, Dwain Jacobs and defender King Solomon Austin are expected to lead the charge for Slingerz FC.
A win tonight would push Slingerz FC to 18 points and with a superior goal-difference they will top the table, above Pele FC who also have 18 points. But should Buxton make an upset win, the East Coast club would push to 12 points and fifth place.
The clash with Fruta Conquerors and Alpha United tells a story of two clubs whose missions are the same. but Alpha United are finding some amount of success while Fruta Conquerors are struggling to live up to their high expectation.
Alpha United, despite their one loss, are a force to be reckoned with and having one of the league’s top strikers in their arsenal, Fruta Conquerors defenders will have to work overtime.
Fruta Conquerors are struggling to find the net in the league, with the Tucville-based club have scored nine goals from their nine games played – only more than Buxton United (6), Monedderlust (7), and GFC (9).
Delon Lanferman, with seven goals in the league, is tied with Pele FC’s Gregory Richardson fort the most in the league. Based on his current form and coupled with Daniel Wilson’s goal-scoring ability, Fruta Conquerors will be tried and tested tonight.
Coach Calvin Allen’s team with the likes of Jermaine Junor, Kwamie La Fleur, Eon Alleyne and Trevon Lythcott will be hard-pressed to at least get a result that would see them remain in the top-four ahead of ‘Playoffs’ at the end of November.
