A TAXI driver attached to the Green Ice Taxi Service is now in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after he lost control of his Toyota Allion Sunday morning and ended up on the shed of a house at Railway Embankment, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. The incident occurred at around 06:00 hrs. According to reports, the so far unidentified man was speeding in an attempt to get away from public-spirited citizens who had witnessed him hitting down an elderly man at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) road just minutes before.
According to an eyewitness on the scene, two women had witnessed the accident at LBI and after the driver had failed to stop to render assistance, they decided to follow him.
It was during this escape that the incident occurred. James Bharrat, owner of the house, who described the accident as “movie style” said that he remains thankful for his life. He noted that he had just exited the house to head to the hospital when he saw the car heading in his direction. “I just come out my house to go to the hospital and all I see is this car flying coming from nowhere, land on my shed and with the impact, everything just come crashing down. I was just about to open the bus door to go in when he come crashing down. I miss getting injured by an inch,” Bharrat said.
Public spirited citizens who had rushed to the scene, assisted in freeing the driver from the car before rushing him to the hospital. While the family is thankful that no one was fatally injured, they are still counting their losses. The matter is engaging the attention of the police.
