Kaneville roads upgrade ongoing

RESIDENTS of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara would soon benefit from improved roads in their community. Construction works are currently ongoing to rehabilitate Second Street and the main Cross Street in the community.Completion of this project, funded by the Government of Guyana and the Caribbean Development Bank, is expected to directly benefit approximately 4,500 residents.

The Ministry of Communities through the Community Roads Improvement Programme (CRIP), recently inked a $68M contract with H. Nauth & Sons to rehabilitate these roadways. The signing ceremony, held in the CRIP Boardroom at Camp Street, was attended by Charles Ceres, Advisor to the Minister (Department of Housing and Water); Karen Roopchand, CRIP’s Project Coordinator; Tejwattie Roopchand, Engineer; and Kiran Nauth and Julian Archer of H. Nauth & Sons.

Whilst offering congratulations to the contractor, Ceres emphasised that government would be strictly monitoring projects to ensure high-quality works are delivered.
Mechanisms, he said, will be put in place to monitor the quality of works being executed under this project.

CRIP expects the contractor to deliver quality work within the contract duration, since no time extension would be granted to the project, Ms Roopchand said. She looks forward to the successful completion of the roads, so that residents could benefit from improved access.

Nauth expressed gratitude to the ministry, and assured that he would be working to complete the project within its two-month duration.

The ministry in a statement yesterday, noted that all projects executed by CRIP are done with involvement by the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and residents. Roopchand emphasised that community meetings will be done between CRIP and relevant stakeholders.

CRIP has submitted unpriced Bills of Quantities to the Golden Grove/ Diamond Place Neighbourhood Democratic Council and the Regional Democratic Council, so that residents would have more access to information.

Additionally, the Project Management Unit, the contractor and representatives of CEMCO, in association with SRKN Engineering, the supervising consultancy firm, have met with residents to inform them about the project.

Through CRIP, over 300 roads in Regions 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been constructed and rehabilitated. These roads have helped to improve the quality of life of residents by creating greater access to schools, health facilities, markets, places of worship and places of work.
