Fisherman stabbed in Pomeroon by boat captain – after rebuke over pass at under-aged girl

A TWENTY-six-year-old fisherman of Walton Hall, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed under his right arm near his heart and on his buttocks by the boat captain, who retaliated after being reprimanded about sexually harassing an under-aged girl.According to the fisherman Parmeshwar Singh, he was returning with other workers after spending several days at sea when the incident occurred in the Pomeroon River. He said the boat captain stopped at a stelling by some people he knew and decided to cook there and relax.
Singh said everything was going well, but he observed the captain doing things which were not right and he felt bad about it. According to the fisherman, the captain pulled at the legs of a 13-year-old girl and tried to fondle her.
He said when they got on the boat and left for Charity he spoke to the captain and advised him not to do such things, because he has a wife and children and he must conduct himself properly.
Singh said the captain became angry, grabbed a knife and stabbed him under his right arm and on his buttocks. According to the fisherman, if he did not hold on to the captain’s hand and pushed him overboard he would have been a dead man. He said the knife wound under his arm required 17 stitches.
The fisherman said the matter was reported to the police but a settlement was agreed between himself and the captain for a sum of $150,000. However, only a sum of $30,000 has been handed over so far.
