ALPHA United, Guyana’s most decorated football club, secured their first win in the Stag Elite League following a 2-0 victory over the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) on Sunday. Playing against the home team, Alpha United were led by second-half strikes from Grenadian Kithson Bain (5th minute) and new signee Dwayne Lawrence (67th minute), to secure their first win in the League.
The win now sees them (Alpha United) in third position behind the undefeated Fruta Conquerors and archrivals Slingerz FC who also picked their first league win (3-0 over Monedderlust) but have a superior goal difference.
While Alpha United dominated the second half of the contest, GFC matched the Odinga Lumumba-owned club in the first half and created several goal-scoring chances of their own.
And after seeing their rivals Slingerz FC secure three points, Alpha United were pressured into ensuring that they too walk away from the contest with maximum points.
It will be fair to say that the first half belonged to GFC, the team many consider as ‘minnows’ of the Stag Elite League, but they were cheered on by the partisan crowd to score against Alpha United in the ‘David versus Goliath’ match-up.
When the two sides came out from the dressing room for the second stanza, having played to a goal-less first half, Alpha United imposed their dominance.
If it were not for Bain’s clumsy footing upfront, coupled with his poor finishing, Alpha United would have won by a wider margin.
However, after missing some certain goal chances, Bain bullied his way past GFC’s defence to connect to a flat pass that came in from Lawrence to beat Derrick Carter in goal.
Ten minutes later, Lawrence broke away and scored on a one-on-one with Carter who was out of position, as Alpha United grabbed a 2-0 lead.
Nothing changed in the game and GFC were forced to ‘park the bus’ for the rest of the contest.
Alpha United’s next game in the league will be against Fruta Conquerors on Sunday, October 4 at the GFC ground and GFC will make a trip to Base Camp Ayanganna where they will come up against the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
