ANDREW `The Eagle’ Murray had his last professional fight on September 25, 2001. The southpaw former Commonwealth welterweight champion had moved up to the junior middleweight division to challenge Englishman Richard `The Secret’ Williams for the Commonwealth junior middleweight title.Williams retained his crown when referee Dave Parris halted the contest at two minutes 21 seconds of the third round to hand Murray his third consecutive defeat within a 13-month period. `The Eagle’ had won the Commonwealth welterweight title in October 1993.
He later added the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin title to his resumé which included the World Boxing Council (WBC) FECARBOX belt. However, the talented southpaw never fought for the Guyana welterweight title.
Four months after the battle with Williams, Murray was involved in a fatal road accident on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. His death brought an end to a stellar career that included a memorable points-victory over American Kevin Pompey at the National Sports Hall.
He made his debut in Barbados in 1990 against Alonzo Clarke and ended with a record on 27 wins (17 KO), seven defeats and one draw.
