FORTY-three officers attached to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) security unit will undergo a self-defence programme that requires technical, professional and physical know-how in the area of martial arts as a defence against any threat. This is the second year an exercise of this nature is being conducted, with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) facilitating the exercise.

The first batch, which comprises 13 Aviation Security Officers (ASOs), is currently being taught the various takedown methods and tactics to neutralise armed assailants over a six-day period.
Training for the other two batches of 15 officers will commence shortly.
The ASO Unit, established in November 2009, is mandated to improve security at the airport on a daily basis. In light of this, every ASO is required to demonstrate the level of his/her operational proficiency when confronted by a hostile airport user.
“These techniques taught will bolster our officers’ confidence in the execution of their duties,” Ramesh Ghir, the airport’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) stated.
