INTOXICATED, Gajpaul Mahase, also known as “Yago”, yesterday plunged to his death in the Mahaicony Creek. The 55-year-old had reportedly been using a series of profanities before he plunged into the creek to swim across its width in search of his wife, Krishna Kumarie, also known as “Yamen”, who reportedly was not at home at the time of the incident.
It is unclear whether the man had been aware that his wife was out of the area, and not over at a friend’s house, where she would usually go sometimes.
Speaking with this publication via telephone yesterday afternoon, the man’s widow said she was out of the area when she received a call that her husband was dead. And when she reached home, no one could really give a clear answer as to how the man had met his demise, although some persons related that he had taken off his clothes and had plunged into the creek and disappeared.
A search launched for the man recovered his remains sometime later. One relative said she does not know the man to behave in the manner he had behaved yesterday, and it was strange to her. She said he had not been someone who would usually go into the water to swim.
This newspaper was told that the man had married his wife only six years ago, although they had been living together for twenty-eight years. From a very tender age, the man used to work with some persons in the area as a caretaker, and that was the job he had been doing at the time of his death.
Gajpaul Mahase is survived by his wife and two children, aged 23 and 27. The police were, up to late last evening, not informed of the drowning, and that the body of the man had been recovered.
