INVESTIGATIONS are still ongoing into the money taken by former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL), Aeshwar Deonarine, who allegedly took $27.8M to pay himself.Minister of Governance Raphael Trotman, at this week’s post-cabinet press briefing said that Deonarine is currently out of the country. He added that, “the absence or presence of a person does not prevent an investigation from continuing.”
“If the man says that it was not intended to commit an act of theft and he intends to return it, we will have to see how that goes and call on him to make good on his undertakings to repay,” said the Minister of Governance, noting that it is only an allegation.
He further informed the media that the government has referred the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice, and if necessary, action will be taken. Minister Trotman noted that government is not in the business of going after people, as that is the job of the police.
