THE future of the E-Governance Project will be determined by the recommendations coming out of the current investigations into the project as was ordered months ago by the Government. However, according to Minister of Governance Raphael Trotman, the project remains under active consideration.“I don’t believe that the government has taken a decision. What obtained in the past I can assure you has been brought to an end, but we are now awaiting a final report, and recommendations as to how we proceed,” Minister Trotman told members of the media as he addressed a post-Cabinet press briefing at the Ministry of the Presidency, on Wednesday.
The aim of the project was to effect the modification and advancement of telecommunications operations of government agencies.
The present government, while in opposition, had several concerns about the project as deadlines upon deadlines were missed. The project was approved by the National Assembly in 2009.
Huawei Technology Company Limited, a Chinese firm, was earmarked in 2009 to provide infrastructural support for the implementation of the project, which included the laying of a fibre-optic cable from Lethem to Georgetown.
