PRESIDENT David Granger has saluted the humanitarian work of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana’s (CIOG).The President yesterday joined in the annual fun day for children hosted by the organisation.

The event is meant to bring cheer to orphans and vulnerable children; it catered for attendees from all of the counties of Guyana, including non-Muslims. The fun day was held at the CIOG Headquarters on Woolford Avenue.
President Granger applauded the work of the CIOG, which he said has engaged in programmes over the years to end poverty, forge social cohesion and increase access to education.
The President said the event reflects the true teachings of Islam when it comes to reaching out to vulnerable groups and children. These kinds of initiatives, the President added, will all aid the government’s effort in alleviating extreme poverty and creating a more cohesive society.
Also present at the event was the United States Chargé d’Affaires Bryan Hunt. He also applauded the CIOG for its humanitarian work being done throughout the country. Hunt said that over the years the CIOG has stuck to the core principles of Islam, which is to promote peace and offer help to the vulnerable.
The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) came into being in 1979 after the Jamaats, Masjids and Organisations supported its formation. Since then, the CIOG has been working in cooperation with other Islamic bodies to provide necessary services to the Muslim community and Guyana as a whole.
