The Ministry of Education (MOE)/Department of Culture, Youth and Sport (DCYS)/National Sports Commission (NSC) seven-week table tennis `Teach Them Young’ summer camp that was held in collaboration with the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), concluded last weekend at the National Gymnasium with a closing ceremony.GTTA president Godfrey Munroe described the programme as a success and told the 62 players who registered for the camp that sessions during the seven weeks catered not only to table tennis development but also to life skills,
He also mentioned that the coaches of the camp worked tirelessly for the past seven weeks and advised the players to put into practice what they have learned at the camp.
Gervy Harry, Administration Officer DOS/NSC, praised the work of the coaches who played a pivotal role, catering for children between the ages of three and 18 years.
The camp produced in the past, players who have represented Guyana at the youth level. He told the participants that wherever they go, they are ambassadors of Guyana.
Ministry of Education Department of Culture, Youth & Sport PE Instructor Seon Erskine, who represented the Director of Sport Christopher Jones, told the youngsters that not having the right attitude can rob them of a place in the team despite how much talent they have.
He warned them not to waste this opportunity and “don’t let anyone tell you that sports can’t take you anywhere and to focus all of your time on academics”, adding, “Don’t forsake your education, but try to be a balanced person by getting involved in sports.
Of the 62 registrants, 90% received the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth & Sport, National Sports Commission Certification of Participation and GTTA Certification of Achievement Bronze Award.
