REGION Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt on Tuesday reported that the river-dam at Charity is in urgent need of repair. He told Councillors at the Statutory Meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) on Tuesday that the dam, which protects the commercial and residential areas at Charity from the Pomeroon River, has already sunk some 12 inches in some places.
He said that given the danger the situation poses, there is urgent need to address it as quickly as possible so as to avoid further slippage of the dam  into the river.
The chairman, who visited Charity last Thursday to meet residents and address problems on the spot, inspected the river-dam after hearing of the problem.
Reports are that the shoulders of the road, which are  occupied mainly by vendors and boat builders, have suffered major damage in some places after a businessman was allowed to construct a gas station using heavy concrete and steel materials some years ago.
Residents in the Charity area are also calling on the government and Ministry of Public Works to urgently address the situation before the Pomeroon River overflows the sunken road during extreme high tides.
