MEMBERS of the New York East Canje Reunion Committee have recognised the outstanding performers at primary schools in the East Canje area who recently wrote the National Grade Six Exams (NGSA) and have offered prizes to some of the top students. At a simple but significant ceremony held at the Training Building of GuySuCo, Rose Hall Estate, the top three performers of the six schools in the area were given cash incentives with the top students receiving US$150 each, runner-up US$125 and third place US$100.
The presentation was facilitated by Anil Beharry who thanked the Committee for their generous contribution to this cause.
Beharry made special mention of Allan Mangru whom he was in regular contact with for many months to make this a reality.
He told the children that this recognition should motivate them and others while also encouraging the parents to use the funds to buy educational materials as the children are preparing for secondary school.
Beharry challenged the students to continue to excel and told them that this is the beginning of new challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the Committee was Satyanand Gobin who congratulated the outstanding students and promised that next year will be bigger; reminding the gathering that this is the third year the students were being recognised and encouraged them to strive for continued success.
He read a prepared message from the NY/East Canje Reunion Committee and thanked GuySuCo for facilitating the event in such a comfortable environment.
Imran Ally, DREO, Region 6, spoke on behalf of the Region while Basmattie Babulal spoke on behalf of the Education Officer and Adesh Singh on behalf of GuySuCo.
One of the top students Devon Reid from Cumberland Primary School thanked the Committee and everyone who made the event possible and promised, on behalf of the students and himself, to work hard to continue to excel.
Pandit Deodat Persaud collected the cash to pay for the chairs and tables on behalf of the Golden Om Dharmic Youth Organisation and he also thanked the Committee for making contributions to the community in which the members are somehow connected.
