In my view… Flooding will only get worse if we don’t move Georgetown from its present location

I WRITE in reference to a photo captioned, “Scenes of the Flood,” found on page 6 of the Friday July 17, 2015 edition of the Guyana Times Newspapers which showed the former President, Bharrat Jagdeo and former Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn, as they visited the Dharma Shala Home of Benevolence. When I saw this picture of Mr. Jagdeo – and let me say that I have never before witnessed him visiting this particular area before – I thought he was there to offer his mansion as a temporary home for victims of the flooding but I was disappointed as that was not the case. It did, however, bring a smile to my face as I realised the message he was trying to send to the citizens.
Flooding has always been a great issue in this country which must be addressed with serious urgency, and I am not referring to 4am Cabinet meeting.
There have been many issues and reports, some of which were made by the Dutch, which should be taken off shelves and reviewed for immediate actions. The Government should not only focus on preventing and reducing flooding in Georgetown, but should seriously consider moving the capital city from its current location because, reflecting on the hasty progression of global warming, the flooding will only get worse and worse.
Our leaders should seek the service of an engineer who is of Guyanese extract who currently resides in Holland to advise them on measures which can be taken against this problem.
Time is not on the side of the Government. The ball in their court.
