TONY `The Tiger’ Marshall defeated Jamaican Errol Brown on July 18, 1992 in Quebec, Canada. The winner of the eight-round welterweight bout was decided by the judges who all pointed to Marshall’s corner. Judge Bruno Beaudry scored the fight 79-73 while Emilien Nadeau and Jean Claude Theroux scored it 77-75 and 78-74 respectively. All were in favour of the Guyanese. 1992 turned out to be the busiest year in Marshall’s career. He was engaged in nine fights over the same period, winning six, drawing two and losing one.
‘The Tiger’ was born in Guyana but left to live permanently in the USA from an early age. In November 1994 he travelled to Argentina to challenge local Julio Cesar Vasquez for the World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight crown.
Marshall lost the contest via unanimous decision. For his second attempt at a world title Marshall took a flight to Spain to challenge Javier Castillejo for the World Boxing Council (WBC) title. He again came up short as the Spaniard won by unanimous decision.
Marshall is from a small group of Guyanese who never fought a professional bout on home soil. The group comprises Cleveland Denny, Dennis Andries, Steve Frank, Egerton Marcus, Adrian Dodson, and Vivian Harris.
