A MEMBER of the Regional Association of Loggers was yesterday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. Devon Robeiro, owner of a logging concession, pleaded not guilty to three charges, two of which said on June 23 at Liberia, Upper Demerara River, he had in his possession one .32 pistol and one .38 revolver without a firearm licence.
It is also alleged that on the same day at Liberia, Upper Demerara River, he also had in his possession nine live rounds of .32 ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder.
According to the prosecution, the police received information and went to the home of the defendant where a search was conducted. During the search, the firearm and ammunition were found and Robeiro accepted ownership under caution.
However, Robeiro’s attorney told the court that his client admitted to ownership of the firearm and ammunition after the police made threats to arrest his mom who fainted. He added that his client does not have a criminal record and has cooperated with the police during investigations.
He was refused bail and the matter was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court for Tuesday. (Geeta Rampersaud)
