THE Guyana Karate Federation (GKF) has dubbed its recent mini tournament in observance of International Olympic Day a success.The event, held in collaboration with the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) over the weekend, featured participants from categories 6-8 years; 9-11 years and 12-14 years (boys and girls) in Kata and Kumite at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Thomas Lands on Sunday June 21, 2015
In the 6-8 male Kata division, Sylvon Hercules, took advantage and demoted to second and third Jeremy and Owen Betton respectively while on the Kumite end of things, Jeremy Betton took the top spot over Hercules and Owen Betton respectively. On the distaff end, Aarti Ramgolan took both the Kata and the Kumite titles.
The 9-11 years male Kata saw Aryan Singh hold off the challenges of Sanjay Gopaul and Daniel Jailall respectively while the Kumite section had Sruit Jairam, Shaquan Norville and Aryan Singh in that order. For the girls, Arshia Singh finished atop the Kata category ahead of Safira Williams and Jasmin Hodge. The Kumite saw Hodge turn the tables on Singh and Chrisann Newton.
In the 12-14 female Kata, Kelly-Ann Fortune led Theresa Sampat and Akeda Verian in that order while Sampat dominated the Kumite aspect ahead of Fortune and Verian. The males had Daqon Garnett, Shakeem Walcott and Tulsiedas Hira finishing in that Kata order while Hira won the Kumite version, demoting Japheth Verian and Jalen Chancellor to second and third respectively.
