NOTABLE DATES

DILLON Carew came from a boxing family. His elder brother Gordon represented Guyana at the 1984 Olympics.Dillon followed in his brother’s footsteps and featured in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He turned pro soon after and two years later (1994) was crowned the lightweight champion of Guyana.
The southpaw Carew did not have an easy street during his 15-year career as he came up against the best which included Diosbelys Hurtado, DeMarcus `Chop Chop’ Corley, Leonard Dorin, Carlos Quintana, Meldrick Taylor and Ricky Hatton, all of whom had been or became world champions.
On April 30, 1999 Carew tackled the Romanian-born Dorin for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental of Americas super lightweight title. The fight was staged at the Turning Stone Resort in New York and undefeated Dorin won by unanimous decision.
Carew, who was 10-2-2 going into the bout against Dorin, added 25 more fights to his record before finally calling it quits in 2007.
He is now a respected trainer at the Gleason’s Gym in New York and last year assisted in the preparation of super heavyweight champion Quincy `Biggy’ Small for the National Open.
