Prisoner found hanging at Lethem police station

ANOTHER prisoner has died while in police custody, this time at the Lethem Police Station, and a probe is underway by Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).Police, in a press release, said at about 08:00 hrs yesterday, the body of Roy Bovell, 36, of Tabatinga, Lethem, who was in custody at the Lethem Police Station, was found hanging from the grill work of the station lock-ups.

It added that the police had earlier visited the lock-ups at 06:15 hrs yesterday where he was alive and well.

Roy Bovell was the only prisoner in the lock-ups at the time and had been arrested at about 19:45 hrs on April 11, 2015, at Tabatinga, after he was found in possession of 60 grams of marijuana.

The body is at the Lethem Hospital mortuary.

And, in an unrelated incident in which another prisoner was found dead while in custody in the lockups at Parika Police Station on February 25, 2015 an investigation by OPR was also done.
Police reported that Zaharadeen Razan, 28, of Cornelia Ida, WCD, was found alive and lying on the floor of the lock-ups during a visit to the lock-ups by the police.
Following questioning of other prisoners in the lock-ups, Razan was taken for medical treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
It was noted that Razan was arrested and taken into custody at about 21:10hrs on February 24, following a report of damage to property that was made against him.

A few years ago another prisoner was found dead in the lockups at La Grange, West Bank Demerara Police Station.

In a separate incident, police said they are looking for a suspect who reportedly shot and injured a man during a quarrel in Linden on Friday night.

It was reported by the police that at about 22:25 hrs on Friday, Dellon Bronswin, 26, of Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden, was involved in a misunderstanding with another man at the Mackenzie Car Park, during which he was shot to his right foot. He has been admitted to hospital. The suspect has not yet been arrested but the investigations are continuing.
