A TWENTY-year-old Lethem man, who was found with cannabis under his mattress, was on Friday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a drug- trafficking charge.Vishnu Singh of Lot 739 Middle Street, Lethem, denied that allegation that read on March 19 at Lethem he had in his possession 29 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.According to Police Prosecutor Michael Grant, on the day in question, about 20:30hrs police ranks acting on information went to the defendant’s home and told him of their suspicion that he was in possession of ammunition and narcotics. The ranks then requested to conduct a search of the premises.
The narcotic, suspected to be leaves, seeds and stems of the plant cannabis sativa was found under the mattress he was sitting on. He was taken to the police station, where the narcotics were weighed in his presence. Singh under caution by the police told the police that the “wee” was his, stating that “he uses it to smoke.”
Singh was represented by Attorney Jerome Khan, who told the court that the narcotic was not found on his person; he also stated that his client was “house sitting” at the time for his friend, who was also arrested.
Khan explained further that his client is a farmer, this was his first offence and that he is not a flight risk.
The prosecutor asked the court to find that the reasons advanced by counsel for the granting of bail to Singh should not be considered special reasons. , adding that the defendant had confessed to the police.
Bail was refused, and the matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate Court for June 1.
