Seelall Persaud DSM yesterday took the oath of office to be confirmed as the Commissioner of Police of the Guyana Police Force, the organization for which he has been heading for the eleven months in an acting capacity.
Immediately after his taking the oath President Donald Ramotar made it clear to the Top Cop that he will be receiving the full support of the Guyana Government.
“I want to take the opportunity to wish him all the best and to assure him of our full support in the discharge of your constitutional duties”
In his appreciation speech, Seelall told the gathering that his career as a policeman was not an easy as it was bumpy and challenging giving the security challenges.
He however pointed out that the challenges were useful as it brought with it excitement and experiences which has allowed him to be prepared for the leadership of the organization.
Persaud served the Guyana Police Force for more than thirty years and but was mostly recognized for his leadership of the Criminal Investigation Department and the police narcotics branch.
The event on Tuesday was attended by his wife, daughter, and members of the Judiciary, heads of services, various commissions, members of cabinet and all police divisional commanders.
Asked if his confirmation could be seen by him as an added challenge for him given General Elections is a mere two months away, the Top Cop was very firm in his response.
“No because I have been preparing for elections since elections was announced as a matter of fact since parliament has been prorogued we were preparing for a lot of the side impacts of an election meaning we started retraining on public order issues on elections campaign issues and so on so our ranks could have an understanding of what the law is and what they are required to do and what their roles are when they get on the ground”
On the issue of the message he wishes to send to persons on the lead up to elections Commissioner Persaud stated that the force is preparing for a worst case situation even though its way beyond what they expect to happen, when quizzed on what he considers a worst case scenario is one where there is a total breakdown of law and order, he also assured members of the public that the water cannon is ready to use.
