GUYANESE-born light heavyweight boxer Dennis Andries was months short of being 33 when he applied brakes to the charging Englishman, Keith Bristol, on February 13, 1986 at the Crest Hotel in London, England. Andries’ aggression whipped up sympathy in referee Harry Gibbs, who called a halt to the contest at one minute and 34 seconds of the bout to hand the Guyanese a TKO victory. Andries record improved to 26-6-2 with the win.
Andries started professional boxing on May 16, 1978.
He became the European light heavyweight champion, the World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion and later the Commonwealth cruiserweight champion. Although born in Guyana, Andries never fought at home. His career spanned 18 years and Andries had his last fight on December 14, 1996.
He left with a record of 49 victories (30 Kos), 14 defeats and two draws. He will turn 62 in November.
