STYLISH Guyanese welterweight boxer Mark Harris improved his record to five wins and five losses when he won an eight-round fight against American Robert Sawyer.The fight was held on January 14, 1982 in Atlantic City and was the first of two encounters with Sawyer.
Harris matched gloves with the American in April of the same year and won that battle via a 10-round split decision. Born on June 16, 1952, Harris was two months short of being 25 when he made his pro debut in 1977.
He won the six-rounder against Eddie Campbell at the Westchester County Centre, in White Plains, New York.
Harris engaged in two fights with Brian Muller. He lost the first held in August 1979 but gained revenge in the return bout staged on Boxing Day of 1980.
On March 3, 1981, the dapper fighter was unsuccessful in a bid for the Commonwealth welterweight title after being TKOed in the ninth round. Referee John Coyle was forced to halt the fight, held in London England, against Colin Jones.
Harris had his last fight on October 23, 1982. He died in February 2008 and left a record of eight victories and six defeats.
