A TWENTY–two-year-old miner found himself in hot water when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, on Tuesday morning.Andrew Riley of Lot 68 Annandale, East Coast Demerara,was remanded to prison after being arraigned for five counts of robbery under arms.
The first charge read that on December 27, 2014 at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, while being armed with a gun, he robbed Cullen Nelson of one cell phone valued $60,000 and $50,000 cash, a total value of $110,000.
The second charge read that on the same day at the above-mentioned location, he also robbed Kevin Craig of $90,000 cash.
The third charge said that Riley robbed Tessa Waterman on the same day of her Nokia cell-phone along with cash, a total of $10,500.
The final charge states that in West Ruimveldt, he robbed Curtis John of one Samsung cell-phone, valued $30,000, a wallet valued 1,500 and $15,000 cash, a total of $46,500.
The court also heard that on December 17, 2014 at West La Penitence, Georgetown, he robbed Sherwin Gilgeous of a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery, along with a Samsung cell phone, a total value of $241,000.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. The magistrate also considered that a firearm was used in each offence, the penalty such offence attracts, and the serious nature of these offence .
The prosecutor also told the court that there is a likelihood that if the defendant is granted bail, he would not return for trial.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld, and Riley was remanded to prison. On January 26, he will make his second court appearance.
