Police in crackdown on speeding and drunk driving –offences cited as ‘recipes for accidents, fatalities’

TRAFFIC Chief Hugh Denhert yesterday said that this year they will have a targeted enforcement on speeding and drunk driving, since these offences are recipes for accidents and fatalities. He noted that they have a handle on drunk driving since they launched a rigid campaign against that offence last year and this new year they will continue in that regard.

Denhert stated that in their targeted enforcement they will be going to selective areas, termed as ‘high risk’ on an impromptu basis to monitor traffic.

He pointed out that their objective is to reduce all categories of road accidents and they have been doing that through education via visits to schools, talks with drivers, symposia and the media.

The Traffic Chief stated that they have projected a good year and so they will maintain their campaigns countrywide. In this regard, he noted, ranks attached to the Traffic Department in all divisions have been doing an excellent job since they also have to do other duties apart from directing traffic every morning.

In this new year, Denhert said he would like to see “good sense prevailing on our roads in which all road users take the necessary precautions and be considerate.”

He urged that: “We should all use the roads carefully since it is no one’s wish to be maimed in an accident or to have their property damaged and so everyone must exercise care and caution foremost.”

Denhert added that using the roads is serious business and should not be taken lightly and on that note the police will continue to intensify their campaigns on speeding and drunk driving.

In this new year, Traffic Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, recorded three accidents with three deaths but for the corresponding period last year there were three accidents with two deaths.

In a comparative analysis the Traffic Department tallied 135 accidents with 146 deaths, including 16 children in 2014.
