FOLLOWING a break for the Christmas season, the Guyana Jaguars, under the supervision of head coach Esaun Crandon and his assistant Rayon Griffith, will resume their preparation for the West Indies Cricket Board/Professional Cricket League NAGICO Super50 tournament today.
The Jaguars minus Barbados Raymond Reifer who went back home for the holiday season, will be undergoing beep-tests along with several other stretching and cardio exercises at the Guyana National Stadium from 08:00hrs today.
According to Griffith who also holds the portfolio of Chairman of Selectors, the final 14-man team which will wing out for Trinidad and Tobago will be selected sometime next week. Two practice matches will be played next Wednesday and Friday at a venue to be named, before the team departs on January 13.
The tournament is being held from January 15 to 24, with the 25th being an alternate day should rain prevent the final from being played on the appointed day, with matches being played at the Queen’s Park Oval, Shaw Park and National Cricket Centre.
The Guyana Jaguars, who are placed in Zone ‘A’ alongside Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC), defending champions Barbados Pride and the Windward Islands Volcanoes, will swing into action on the opening day when they face-off with the Volcanoes before opposing Barbados Pride on January 17 and CCC on January 19.
Zone ‘B’ comprises the Windies Under-19s, Jamaica, Leeward Islands Hurricanes and hosts Trinidad and Tobago Red Force and according to the WICB, their Under-19 team will be using the tournament as part of a long-term build-up for the next International Cricket Council’s Under-19 World Cup in 2016.
The Guyana Jaguars will be contesting all their games at the picturesque Queen’s Park Oval and they may be without Leon Johnson and Narsingh Deonarine, while Kemo Paul, Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Shimron Hetmyer are all expected to be in the Young West Indies side for this tournament.
