NATIONAL Cycle coach Hassan Mohamed will conduct a nine-race cycle programmme around the inner circuit of the National Park on Saturday, beginning at 09:00 hrs.The programme which is being sponsored by Geddes Grant under its Seven Seas Cod Liver brand for the 11th consecutive year is expected to attract most of Guyana’s top cyclists, including a number of those that represented Guyana at the recently concluded 2014 Glasgow, Scotland Commonwealth Games.
Keen and exciting competition is anticipated in all nine races and defending champion of the feature 35-lap event Hamzah Eastman will be hard pressed to make a successful defence of the title he won last year, as names such as Michael Anthony who dominated the National Park last week with wins in the juveniles 10-lap race as well as the feature event of the National Sports Commission sponsored `Teach Them Young’ Evaluation programme is firing on all cylinders at the moment.
Added to Anthony, Alonzo Greaves, Raynauth Jeffrey and Marlon `Fishy’ Williams should by Saturday be recuperated fully from their trip from Scotland to Guyana after the Commonwealth games.
These cyclists apart, there is also Warren McKay, Paul DeNobrega and Orvil Hinds that will definitely pose a great threat to Eastman who returned a time of one hour, 18 minutes 55.56 seconds in winning the event last year.
Anthony clocked 23 minutes 02.16 seconds in winning the 10-lap race for juveniles and is expected to make a successful defence of that title.
So too is junior Niles who won the five-lap race for veterans under 45 years of age in a time of 13 minutes 25 seconds.
The in-form Stephan Husbands is expected to make a successful defence of the five-lap event for mountain bikers, having won the event last year with a time of 16 minutes 05.06 seconds.
Apart from those events, there will also be two-lap races for BMX boys and 6-9 year-olds, three-lap events for BMX boys 12-14 year-olds and another three-lap race for BMX open.
Geddes Grants’ Production Specialist Ms. Karen Cornell will represent the company on the day of the activity and also make the presentation of prizes to the respective winners.
