THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport would like to inform the public that as of March 1, 2014 the National Sports Commission’s Board has been reappointed, after the term life of the previous Board came to an end in February 2014.
The current Board members include Chairman Conrad Plummer and the Ex-Officio Member in the Director of Sport, Neil Kumar. The other members of the Board include Vidushi Persaud, Peter Green, Alicia Fortune, Sean Richmond, Peter Abdool, Frank De Abreu, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Steve Ninvalle, Hector Edwards, Pradeep Balram and Cheryl Thompson.
All of these members bring with them skills and knowledge about a range of sports and legal matters regarding sports. This is important for the continued development and promotion of sports in Guyana.
The reappointment of this Board is consistent with the National Sports Commission Act of 1993. The life of this current Board will come to an end on February 28, 2016.
Member profiles
CK Plummer – Chairman
Mr. Plummer represented the Nation in Field Hockey consistently from 1970-1982 and competed in numerous international tournaments, including the Pan-American Games. He has been an Executive Member of the Guyana Hockey Board thereafter until 1992, and served as a Member and eventual Chairman of the National Sports Commission for many periods.
He has a Diploma for Volunteerism from the International Olympic Committee. Plummer was also recognised by the Guyana Olympic Committee for his distinguished contribution to sport as a player and as an administrator. In 1997 he was awarded the Medal of Service by Her Excellency, the late President Janet Jagan for his long and dedicated service in the field of Banking.
Ex-Officio Member, Director of Sport Neil Kumar
Mr Kumar has been holding the position of Director of Sport for several years, Member of Parliament, Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Oaths.
Ms Vidushi Persaud – Shooting/Squash
Ms Persaud is an Attorney-at-Law in private practice at a Family Law Firm: Persaud & Associates. She was called to the Guyana Bar in 2001 and since then has been engaged in Chambers’ practice and contentious civil proceedings in High Court and Magistrates’ Court, Criminal Practice in High Court and Magistrates’ Courts, Settling security documents for banking clients, Company Law and is a Trademark and Patent Agent.
She enjoys and is involved with a number of various sports and in 2013 was appointed by the Guyana Government (Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport) as a Member of the National Sports Commission.
Peter Green – Rugby/Powerlifting
Mr Green has been involved in Amateur Powerlifting for the last 6 years and with rugby for a year now. In both disciplines his efforts were aimed at developing and promoting the sports, and as a result teams representing Guyana have been able to compete nationally and internationally.
With regard to powerlifting, Guyanese have competed at the World Nationals, Pan American Games and Caribbean Championships. The most recent success in rugby was seen last Saturday when the Guyanese team defeated Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, Guyana’s rugby team has moved up the international rating scale.
Alicia Fortune – Body Building/Athletics
Ms Fortune is probably the most athletic member on the National Sports Commission Board since she has a number of accolades under her belt.
These include being a national bodybuilder, IAS level two coach, massage therapist, fitness trainer, PE teacher, football referee, and she has numerous medals for her tenure as a sprinter (100 and 200 metres) and long distance.
Sean Richmond – Boxing
Mr Richmond has been aTax Administration Officer for over 23 years and has provided significant scope and experience in the Administration and Implementation of Tax Legislation and Fiscal Policies.
Informed by being integrally involved in the management of several Central and Regional Tax Offices through which these policies are administered, particular reference is made to specialised work done over 18 years at various departments of Customs and Trade Administration, together with substantial involvement in the transition of tax regimes which realised the establishment and imposition of Value Added and Excise Tax Regimes in concert with Income Tax, among others, under the umbrella body of the Guyana Revenue Authority.
Peter Abdool – Boxing
Abdool has functioned as the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC) – Caribbean Boxing Federation, and the Guyana Boxing Board of Control. He has also been a member of the Board of Governors of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the Supreme Council of the World Boxing Council (WBC). Mr Abdool is also the Past President of the Rotary Club of Georgetown.
Frank De Abreu – Football
Mr De Abreu has been involved in a variety of sport disciplines for many years, and believes that Guyana can produce gold medallists in boxing and swimming. This is so because of the vast development that has occurred over the years.
Steve Ninvalle
Mr Ninvalle is the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. He was also a sportswriter with Stabroek News and the president of the Guyana Boxing Association and vice-president of the Alpha United Football Club.
Hector Edwards – GOA/Cycling
Edwards has over 19 years of professional accomplishments in teaching and accounting at the national level. His athletic credentials include his appearance as a cyclist from 1979 to 1995.
As a sport administrator, Mr. Edwards has and continues to perform duties in the Flying Stars Cycling Club, Guyana Cycling Federation, Amateur Athletics Association of Guyana, and the Guyana Olympic Association.
Dr Pradeep Balram – Table Tennis
Dr Balram has over 20 years of experience in the medical field, and aside from that he is also the Senior vice-chairman of the Guyana Table Tennis Association. Dr Balram has been engaged in the table tennis administration for about four years now.
Cheryl Thompson – Cycling
Ms Thompson has been involved in cycling for a number of years as the president of the Guyana Cycling Association. Under her patronage there has been an increase in the number of cycling meets and some of the cyclists have also been able to travel overseas to advance their skills.
