Spunky ‘Granny’ turns 92 : –Thanks God for good health

FIDLIA Solomon, called ‘Granny’, celebrated her 92nd birthday on Thursday last (April 24), at Port Kaituma in Region 1 (Barima-Waini), at the residence of one of her daughters.

Aside from being visually impaired, Mrs. Solomon is in good health, and her visual challenge does not preclude her from being au fait with everything taking place around her. Moreover, she is a very good conversationalist.

She has 16 children, numerous grand-children, and countless great-great-grandchildren and relatives.

This feisty Granny, who outlived her husband (he passed away a few years ago), has an effervescent personality, and credits her positive attitude and longevity to God, a balanced diet and exercise.

Granny performs normal tasks with relative ease, and still listens to the radio, particularly the news. She was born at Mabaruma, but has spent most of her life at Matthews Ridge and Port Kaituma, where some of her children reside. She was engaged in farming in her younger days.

Mrs. Solomon loves to spend time chatting with her grandchildren, to whom she would recite old stories of her ‘glory days’. And her grand-children love to pamper her, especially Cindy Naomi Thomas of Garrison Hill, Matthews Ridge, who enjoys chatting with her granny.

Cindy told the Guyana Chronicle that there is never a dull moment when her ‘Granny’ is around. She thinks it’s a remarkable achievement to attain the grand old age of 92.

‘Granny’ celebrated her birthday with a thanksgiving service on Thursday. She was surrounded by her children and other relatives at the home of one of her many daughters. ‘Granny’ thanks God that she is still in relatively good health.
