THIS country’s population is too small and comprising a readership too readily persuaded by the media, which leaves its future in peril. The National Elections of 2011 provide a classic example of untoward ramifications for the country to contemplate. The press, having seized the initiative, proceeded immediately to promote the idea that the PPP/C had lost the elections and inflated euphoria in the minds of the combined Opposition over the one-seat majority in Parliament, which in effect produced a minority Government.
Since then, we are experiencing the horrors resulting from intentional anti-developmental, anti-nationalist and unlawful behaviour by the combined Opposition with its one-seat majority. This disgraceful agenda is being encouraged by sections of the press which, as a matter of routine, extend prominent coverage to the many instances of impropriety. The press has successfully moulded the minds of the reading public to accept all the political propaganda that is daily spewed by both Opposition parties against the ruling PPP/C administration.
This combination of press and the APNU/AFC is quite formidable and necessitates extra time being spent on refuting myriad unsupported and wild allegations.
It is the single supporting entity that functions as GINA – The Government Information Agency- which assists the government to debunk the garbage of the Opposition, but therein is the kind of circumstances that contribute to the perception that the future of this nation is not regarded in good standing.
This is certainly not a situation that should any longer be permitted to gain traction; this in turn makes the need to call new elections an attractive alternative.
The wholesale bundling of the combined Opposition on such vitally important projects as Amaila Falls Hydro, AML/CFT and others, together with the absurd call to abandon efforts to keep the sugar industry vibrant, are issues that will work against APNU/AFC fortunes should elections be called.
Loyalty to one’s country and fresh imaginative thinking, maturity in action, are all essential attributes that highlight a deficiency in the make-up of the agenda of both APNU/AFC political parties. New elections will solve those problems and restore the unimpeded forward movement of the country.
The people are crying out for legislation to be passed for the AML/CFT bill, Hydro Electric, Specialty Hospital, modernisation of CJIA, and they are desirous of seeing the continuation of the massive housing and water development, further opening up of new highways, and electrification of same, and the ongoing social services to be preserved, the cooperation of the gold and diamond industry be maintained, the encouragement to farmers be assured, which are all the continuum of progress that are initiatives of the PPP/C Government which, if permitted to succeed, will confound the cynics who share the view that Guyana has no future; but then again we have to contend with the anti-nationalists currently inhibiting these forward movements being pursued by the PPP/C administration.
