Khalil continues winning ways with 2nd round victory over Phang
JASON-Ray Khalil continued his winning ways when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA)/Bounty Farm Annual Mashramani Handicap tournament continued on Wednesday evening at the Georgetown Club Courts.Khalil, a former Junior Caribbean champion who has a minus 22 handicap and who disposed of Medhi Ramdhani in the first round on Tuesday, returned to the courts on Wednesday evening to brush aside Matthew Phang (plus nine handicap) 15-12, 15-4 to advance to the quarter-final round which was billed for last evening.
Also chalking up victories in the open category were former Senior Guyana and Caribbean champion Regan Pollard, (minus 16 handicap), Ben Mekdeci (minus 10 handicap), Antonio Joseph (plus 12 handicap) Ryan Rahaman (plus six handicap), Nicholas Narainj (minus eight handicap), Anthony Islam (plus 12 handicap) and Lloyd Fung-A-Fat (plus seven handicap).
Pollard who drew a bye to the second round disposed of Daniel Islam (plus 11 handicap) in three sets after dropping the first set 9-15. He won the other two sets 15-13, 15-3.
Mekdeci defeated Stephen Fernandes (plus seven handicap) 2-15, 15-13, 15-13, while last year’s open category runner-up Nicholas Narain beat Ashley Khalil (minus three handicap) 8-15, 15-7, 15-7 and Joseph defeated Alec Melville (plus two handicap) 15-11, 15-5.
Anthony Islam beat Mundini 15-11, 12-15, 15-13, Rahaman defeated Robin Lowe 14-16, 15-13, 15-12 and Fung-A-Fat beat Rebecca Lowe (plus four handicap), last year’s Category `A;’ champion 15-12, 1q7-15.
Mekdeci was down to face Pollard last evening while Narain had to face Anthony Islam, Joseph was down to play Jason Ray Khalil and Rahaman was scheduled to face Fung-A-Fat in the other quarter-final fixtures.
The Category `A’ competition got under way on Wednesday evening with six matches.
In those results, Braydan Debidin beat John Phang 15-9, 15-12, Madison Fernandes defeated Dominic Collins 15-12, 12-15, 15-12, Nathan Rahaman who drew a bye lost to Paige Fernandes 11-15, 12-15, Makeda Harding beat Ethon Jones 15-10, 15-10, G. Carpenter defeated Sarah Lewis 15-9, 15-4 and will meet J. Edwards who got past Maya Collins 16-8, 11-15, 15-13.
The tournament will continue this evening and conclude tomorrow at the same venue with a fundraising Barbecue.
