TTABA names team for next month’s GBA Goodwill Series : … joins St Lucia and Jamaica as foreign competitors

THE Trinidad and Tobago Amateur Boxing Association (TTABA) under the stewardship of Cecil Forde has confirmed and also named its team of boxers to compete in next month’s Goodwill Series which is being organised by the Steve Ninvalle-steward Guyana Boxing Association (GBA).According to Ninvalle, Forde made contact with him around 13:20hrs yesterday afternoon and informed him that the TTABA would be sending a team of 11 (7 boxers and 4 officials) to Guyana for the Series which will be held from February 14 to 16 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).

The confirmation of the Trinidadians, whose contingent is the largest, brings the number to three foreign competitors for the Goodwill Series, following the earlier confirmation of Jamaica and later St Lucia, who were the first to indicate their willingness to do battle against their Guyanese counterparts.
Akmal Stroude (52kg), Christian McDonald (56kg), Michael Alexander (60kg), Jean-Paul Cooper (64kg), Akiel Outram (69kg), Aaron Prince (75kg) and the lone female in Chimere Taylor who will be competing in the 75kg class, are the Simon Purees selected to represent the Twin Island Republic.
Forde will execute the duties of manager, while there are two coaches in Reynold Cox and Floyd Trumpet, with Codrington Joefield joining his Guyanese counterparts in executing the duties of Referee/Judge at the Goodwill Series.
Meanwhile, the GBA has its squad of boxers in training, not only for the Goodwill Series but also several other Championships on international soil, such as the Commonwealth Games and Cardova Cardin Championships in Cuba.
“Other than this upcoming Goodwill Series, the GBA has their eyes set on sending a team to the South American Championships which will be held in Chile from March 13 to 18 of this year; so this Goodwill Series will serve as warm-up for our boxers. It will also give our team of coaches and technical staff, the opportunity to assess our boxers,” said Ninvalle.
The hard-working GBA head said the boxers are currently undergoing an encampment period under the watchful eyes of a team of coaches, as the GBA intends to leave no stone unturned in ensuring success not only at the Goodwill Series, but the other tournaments they plan to compete in this year.
