President lauds Dr. Yesu Persaud’s sterling contribution to Guyana’s development
PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar, last Friday evening, lauded Dr. Yesu Persaud’s ‘significant’ contribution to the growth of the local private sector, to the extent that he considers him one of the industry’s many pioneers. The occasion was a reception held in Dr Persaud’s honour at the New Thriving Events Centre on Camp and Lamaha Streets, where President Ramotar spoke glowingly of Dr. Persaud’s many achievements over the years, particularly in the field of business and entrepreneurship, which in turn helped contribute significantly to the country’s social and economic development.

Dr. Persaud, last December, retired his position as Chairman of the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) after serving the company for 48 years.
According to his successor, Mr. Komal Samaroo, under his “outstanding leadership”, DDL has seen tremendous transformation, whereby it is now being used as a base of sorts to create a diversified group of companies.
“He’s a phenomenal fighter; he fights for what he believes in, and to protect what he builds…He dedicated a great portion of his life to building the company; he has provided very outstanding, visionary leadership, and given opportunities to many young professionals in the company,” Samaroo said.
A man who’s not afraid to take risks and venture into uncharted waters, Samaroo said Dr Persaud has over the years succeeded in building, out of a very traditional company, mind you, a very modern industry that is very much in keeping with trends in today’s world.
As the ‘man of the moment’ himself observed, DDL is now a company that is “second to none” in Guyana. “DDL is a shining star; there is nothing precluding it from moving forward,” he said.
DDL now boasts over 1,300 employees, both locally and abroad, and distributorships in Canada, the United States of America and all across Europe.
