MORE than 600 customers’ telephone services in Bartica have been affected by damage caused to several of GT&T cables in the mining district by a third-party contractor.
The telephone company said this significant damage will require extensive excavation works (including concrete) and replacement for a section of 900,600 and 200 pair cables for a conduit crossing.
GT&T has repeatedly appealed to contractors to consult the company before carrying out excavation and construction works to avoid such damage and disruptions.

The telephone plant facilities are most vulnerable to damage and degradation by contractors’ activities but more importantly, hundreds of customers associated with the telecommunications provider are adversely affected in so far as they are unable to communicate during periods of service disruption.
GT&T said it wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused as a result of these disruptions. “We have a vested interest in keeping our customers happy and wish to assure them that the company will continue to collaborate closely with all stakeholders with a view of ensuring care and caution in the execution of works and ultimately reduce telephone service disruptions,” GT&T stated.
The company also apologised for the inconvenience caused and said it is sparing no effort to restore service at the earliest opportunity.
